So, what is wrong with the early 2000's S80?

Kinja'd!!!

These can be picked up all day long for under $3,000. That's 300m prices. So what's the catch?

They're rather unreliable in general from what I've heard.

Drove one a while back. Liked it - probably S60 is a more manageable size.

i5 has a know pita problem with the pcv system, 200 dollar part plus labor to fix, can cause a host of issues if not addressed. Easy diy tho

As far as I know, there isn't one.

Nothing major on that list, most cars that age have much longer ones. I routinely see moon-mileage ones for sale, so apparently they go on forever.

They're dirt cheap here as well, and I think it's more about desirability than anything else. Not that many people want an old luxury-ish car, not many people want an old Volvo 'for the badge', the handling's pretty staid, and the looks are smart but also rather staid.

Personally I like the looks a lot from the front, but I find the size of the boot ruins the lines from the back. The S60 carried the same look off much better.

The search bar is your friend! Do not be afraid!

TL:DR - The Auto trannies on the early S80's tend to blow up, Flame Trap issues plus maintenance is not exactly cheap. I love the shape, decent interior. If you really want one, go after the 2006 MY

Transmissions usually grenade around 60-80k, turbos go out shortly after on the T6 cars, then there's the electrical issues. They're solid if you stay on top of the maintenance, otherwise the cost of repairs quickly surpasses the value of the car.

a couple little thing but nothing too bad. I would put it on par or a little better than most used Euro cars.

I have a friend with an S60 from that era (2002 I think?). He's not a gearhead or anything and pretty much just drives the shit out of it. Had a few problems, but mostly just electronic gremlins from what I understand. His window went off track and his solution was to just duct tape the thing to the top of the door...

I had a T6 with about 60k on it about 10 years ago, it was all the little toys that kept going out, the seat heaters, or more specifically the button, then the lights went out on some of the climate controls that were multiple button operated, then the motor for the wipers on the headlights. Just a bunch of little things all the time. I would spend every weekend chasing down what switch, or relay was bad and taking apart the interior to fix. I had no issues with major mechanicals. It pulled hard for most cars built around that time, and was an excellent highway car, ate up miles and got great gas mileage when you put it in cruise control.

I wouldn't call them unreliable in the sense of breaking down & stranding you, but they don't age too well. The transmissions are fairly weak & leak prone, but can last a long time if they're serviced every 50k or so. The control arm bushings and strut mounts are made of silly putty. Avoid the T6 like the plague, they're an absolute nightmare. Never has 280hp felt slower. The non-turbo is still no fun to work on, but they don't have any power, and they're thrashy & inefficient. The T6 is such a piece of shit that they make the non-turbo 2.9 look good. If they'd have given us the 2.5L turbo in them it'd be a big improvement. The seat material doesn't last at all, and some of the interior electronics such as the instrument cluster & radios are failing more frequently now.

Yeah, the AWD 2.5t ones are pretty ok.
